Ok, first for reference, see https://git.ipxe.org/ipxe.git/commit/8dd...06d8394af2 (which should make it possible for you to use the keyboard)
Are you using the exact same script in both cases? (embedded and from server) How are you building ipxe? Please make sure that the first bytes in the script file is #!ipxe You might be seeing this kind of behavior if there is BOM as the first bytes in the script for example.
