RE: 486er hangs on boot with iPXE floppy
Yup, absolutely sure. Yes, exactly that one.
I've got the terminal open, still. Copied and pasted here:

Code:
ipxe/src $ make bin/ipxe.dsk
[... lots of stuff successfully compiling ...]
  [AR] bin/blib.a
ar: Erzeugen von bin/blib.a
  [HOSTCC] util/zbin
  [VERSION] bin/version.ipxe.dsk.o
  [LD] bin/ipxe.dsk.tmp
  [BIN] bin/ipxe.dsk.bin
  [ZINFO] bin/ipxe.dsk.zinfo
  [ZBIN] bin/ipxe.dsk.zbin
  [FINISH] bin/ipxe.dsk
rm bin/version.ipxe.dsk.o bin/ipxe.dsk.zinfo bin/ipxe.dsk.zbin bin/ipxe.dsk.bin

ipxe/src $ cd bin/

ipxe/src/bin $ ls ipxe.dsk
ipxe.dsk

ipxe/src/bin $ dd if=ipxe.dsk of=/dev/fd0

Oki, booted the floppy again on the athlon machine, that can successfully boot from this floppy disk.
The output is:
Code:
Loading ROM image.................................
iPXE 1.0.0+ (be9e) -- Open Source Network Boot Firmware -- http://ipxe.org
Features: DNS HTTP iSCSI TFTP SRP AoE ELF MBOOT PXE bzImage Menu PXEXT

net0: <some specific ipv6-addy here> using rtl8139 (yeah this machine also has such a card.. so not a problem) on 0000:03:01.0 (open)
[Link up, TX:0 TXE:0 RX:0 RXE:0]
Configuring (net0 <same ipv6-addy as above>).....

The 486er shows the usual:

Code:
Loading ROM image.................................
(hangs and needs a hard reset)
