intelxl with loopback stuck during loading of ipxe.efidrv
Hi,

I'm working on a server board that has multiple onboard NICs:
- Intel I210 with 1 physical (1 GbE) port
- Intel I350 1GbE with 4 physical (1 GbE) ports
- Intel X722 with 2 physical (10GbE SFP+) ports

In the UEFI firmware I've integrated iPXE as a UEFI driver. It gets loaded right after its gEfiSimpleTextOutProtocolGuid dependency is loaded. Not sure if it is dependent on other protocols, but at least I know that loading it before have any form of output protocol prevents the driver from initializing.

For test purposes, some of the boards have a cable between the two X722 ports to form a loopback. When loading the iPXE UEFI driver in the BIOS boot process, the driver is stuck in an infinite loop when connecting the X722 port to the iPXE driver. It only continues after removing the loopback. Because I wasn't sure where to look, I decided to enable debug for all of the objects that are being built when building the ipxe.efidrv driver.

The log output is at the bottom. Some notes:
  • I removed the initialization of other devices, as this would otherwise be a log of 4k lines. So only one of the X722 ports is in.
  • What you can see is that at some point it starts to infinitely print the speed and status in the intelxl ("INTELXL 0x861c0790 PHY 0x16 speed 0x08 status 0xe1"). I would expect that it would time-out within a reasonable time to continue with the boot process, but this is not the case. It is really stuck in an infinite loop and preventing the server from continuing.
  • For the I350 I actually also have a network cable running between two ports to create a loopback, and this doesn't cause the intel driver to hang.
  • A bit later in the boot process, when it actually tries to perform a PXE boot for all NICs, the X722 does not infinitely hang but just fails (as expected) to perform a PXE boot.

Any idea's on how to fix this infinite loop during the initialization/connecting of the driver?

Best regards,

Martijn

RE: intelxl with loopback stuck during loading of ipxe.efidrv
by building the pcii-d.x you would have a ipxe with only that driver supported see https://ipxe.org/appnote/buildtargets
Do you see the same issue with loopback when building and starting as a normal .efi?
Loopback should be part of normal dev testing: https://ipxe.org/dev/driver so seems odd that you have that issue.

On that note, I would recommend sending this to the mailing list - you might want to have a little less details in the mail, and refer to this thread.
